Traditional or anatomical forehead?
Not all feet are the same.
And at MEXAS we know this well: each person has a different shape, a unique gait, and a different need.
That's why we don't use a single last for everything, but instead we design several types of fronts and lasts so that each person can find the perfect MEXAS for them.
In this article we help you better understand the differences and choose your ideal shoe last.
1. What is the “front” of the shoe?
The toe box is the part of the shoe where your toes go. It's the area that most influences how your feet feel when you walk: whether they're comfortable and free, or if they're squeezed without you even realizing it.
At MEXAS we work with two main types:
-
Traditional front → narrower, classic, ideal for thin feet or those who prefer a gathered style.
-
Anatomical front → adapts to the natural shape of the foot, with more space in the front. Ideal for normal or wide feet, or if you're looking for more freedom for your toes.

2. And what is a shoe last?
The last is the internal shape on which the shoe is manufactured.
In other words: It is the base that defines the width, volume and how it adapts to the foot. At MEXAS we have several lasts depending on the shape of the shoe and the type of foot it is intended for.

3. What shoe lasts do we use at MEXAS?
Here's a quick guide to our main lasts:
- MEXAS → Traditional front, with a more stylized shape ending in a point.
- KARLA → Anatomical front, but with a narrower fit.
- NOPAL → Medium anatomical front, ideal for medium or wide feet.
- BIO → Our widest last, with a rigid sole and plenty of room for your toes.

4. What model does each last use?
MEXAS Last
- Classic, narrow front with a more stylized point.
- Ideal if you don't need much space for your fingers or you're not used to seeing yourself with an anatomical forehead.
- Flexible sole with a soft drop in all our traditional huaraches such as CATRINA, FOLKLORE, SAHUAYO, ACAPULCO, CHIAPAS, etc.
- Non-flexible sole, with platform on all espadrilles: CHETUMAL
Karla last
- Anatomical forehead, but rather narrow.
- Ideal if you have a medium or narrow foot and are looking for a barefoot feel.
- AZTECA BAREFOOT and MAYA BAREFOOT : These are closed-toe sandals with ankle straps, flexible soles, and zero drop. Sole height: 1 cm.
- TACO AND TORTILLA : open-front sandals with ankle strap, they have a leather sole, it is a rigid sole and has a small heel.
- ALEBRIJE: an open-toe, closed-heel sandal with a flexible rubber sole and a slight drop. Currently, it's our only colorful option with an anatomical toe box (we're already working on more options for 2026).
Nopal plant
- More spacious anatomical front, comfortable for medium or wide feet.
- This last is currently only available with a transition sole with a slight drop.
- Models: NOPAL and CHILAQUILÓN
Organic last
