Huaraches: Mexican shoes with more than 500 years of history

The Huaraches and MEXAS

Love at first sight

Huaraches were our first inspiration. This 100% handmade Mexican shoe is made with strips of colorful leather hand-woven into a variety of shapes. And yes, 100% handmade , because if it isn't, it's not a huarache, but simply a braided leather shoe.

Huaraches are the reason MEXAS was born. But what's their history? What makes them so special? In this post, we'll tell you all about this iconic Mexican shoe, which you can now also enjoy in Europe.

What is a huarache?

Designs and colors

Huaraches are a cross between a sandal and a shoe. They're known for their comfort and for being made with handmade braided leather straps. Although the most typical models are tan, today you can find them in pastel shades, vibrant colors, and even multi-color combinations.

Materials and sole

  • Insole: Can be leather or synthetic. At MEXAS, we choose 100% leather insoles, as synthetic materials can cause feet to sweat and diminish the quality of the shoe.

  • Sole: Traditionally, huaraches have rubber soles, but there are also versions with esparto soles or plastic platforms.

  • Leather: Cowhide is primarily used, offering durability and comfort. Plant-based products are used in the tanning process, minimizing the use of chemicals.

History of huaraches

Pre-Hispanic origin

The word huarache comes from the Purépecha word kwarachi . This indigenous culture from Michoacán, Mexico, has been making huaraches for over 500 years. Originally, they were made of cotton, but with the arrival of the Spanish, they began to be made of cowhide, giving rise to the huaraches we know today.

From the countryside to fashion

For centuries, huaraches were worn by peasants and monks for their comfort, affordability, and ease of repair. However, in the 21st century, this footwear has evolved: new designs, weaves, and colors have brought huaraches to boutiques, runways, and fashion magazines.

Huaraches outside Mexico

Today, huaraches have crossed borders. Although similar versions exist in Central America, they have never been so popular internationally. The United States is the largest importer, and at MEXAS, we aim to bring this shoe to all of Europe, maintaining the artisanal production and essence of a unique shoe.
